Millions of young girls in Africa are forced to undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Unwillingly, the girls are brought and taken to a "woman cutter".While I do understand and agree with the concept of the preservation of a young female’s purity and virginity until marriage, I do not believe this is her responsibility alone.
Of the 30, some 28 of the girls were found to have been subjected to the most severe form of genital mutilation, when the clitoris and labia are completely cut away and the genital area sewn together except for a small opening.
Since 1999 it is also an offence under Swedish law if the procedure is performed in a different country.
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is an affect that results from a society of men that cannot seem to keep their hands off of little girls. I have been told before that ‘..we must circumcise our daughter’s to ensure they remain pure and untouched..’ , ‘..they remain virgins until marriage..’ and ‘..to protect them from being raped..’
Does that sound ludicrous? Well, so does slicing off little girl’s body parts that she was born with, for the sole intention of protecting her from the men in her culture.
Here in the West it is not necessary to perform FGM on our little girls. And why? Because us men were taught as little boys to have respect for little girls. We were taught to keep our hands off of them. Are there exceptions to this? Absolutely. Unfortunately, the majority of those exceptions are the result of men from other “cultures.”
If the indoctrination of hate, violence and intolerance in the Islamic culture was replaced with the indoctrination of love, honor and respect for their women, perhaps FGM would not be necessary.
Efforts should be made to use all available educational and counseling resources to dissuade parents from seeking a ritual genital procedure for their daughter. In those circumstances in which an infant, child, or adolescent appears to be at risk of FGM, the AAP recommends that its members educate and counsel the family about the health effects of FGM. Parents should be reminded that performing FGM is illegal and constitutes child abuse in the United States.
