At least 36 people were killed after a passenger ferry with 173 passengers and 16 crew capsized in rough waters in the central Philippines today, a disaster monitoring official said.
The figure is slightly higher than the count of the Philippine Coast Guard, which announced 36 casualties as of 5 pm Thursday.
Philippine National Red Cross chief Richard Gordon told Agence France-Presse that based on the latest figures from rescuers, there were 38 dead, 33 missing, and 118 rescued from the capsized boat which was bound for Pilar town in the Camotes islands in Cebu.
Balilo said the incident at 12:50 p.m. He added the coast guard was also checking reports that one of the passengers was a foreigner.
Mary Jane Drake, who was traveling with her mother and American husband, said the ferry was pulling slowly out of the port when it suddenly flipped to the left in strong waves and overturned, trapping her and other passengers. She, her mother and husband swam to safety from underneath the ferry.
The leader of Ormoc's rescue group, Ciriaco Tolibao, said divers are working with army frogmen scouring the hull of the overturned boat.
"We are trying hopefully to find survivors or at least recover the bodies," he said.
